CEU: Using Movement in Therapy

Research in neuro-psychology and polyvagal theory has confirmed: trauma lives in the body. As mental health service providers, we are exposed daily to the sensory and somatic experiences of our clients, as we support them throughout their healing process. One of the greatest responsibilities in preventing therapist burnout is the acknowledgment and release of these transmitted stressors and tensions. Exploring the mind-body connection through dance/movement therapy and mindfulness techniques, participants will have an opportunity to examine and expand their self-knowledge, build skills in body-based rapport building, and obtain tools in nonverbal co-regulation for their work with trauma survivors. Current research on vicarious trauma in counseling, wellness and self-care, and related frameworks will also be discussed as a way to reinforce burnout prevention and counselor resilience. This workshop will address and reinforce the importance of self-awareness and care of one-self, while simultaneously caring for others.

This exchange will be the basis of the group creating a 'Family Map' as part of an experiential exercise. While each person in the group creates their own Family Map, we will collaborate together as as various aspects of Structural Family Systems are explained and described.

Participants will see how constructing a Family Map for couples, individuals and families provides a rich understanding of a family member's experience. Furthermore, maps can provide clear treatment goals and indicate what interventions need to be executed by the therapist.
